How to perform a seal check on a Half Facepiece Respirator?

Performing a seal check on a half facepiece respirator ensures that it is properly fitted and providing effective protection. There are two types of seal checks: positive pressure and negative pressure.

Here's how to perform each:

1. Positive Pressure Seal Check:
Step 1: Cover the exhalation valve (usually located in front of the respirator) with your hand.
Step 2: Gently exhale into the respirator.
Step 3: If the facepiece bulges slightly without any air escaping around the edges, the seal is good. If you feel air leaking around the seal, adjust the fit and try again.

2. Negative Pressure Seal Check:
Step 1: Cover the inhalation valves or cartridges with your hands (if equipped with removable cartridges, you can block the inlets).
Step 2: Gently inhale and hold your breath for a few seconds.
Step 3: The facepiece should collapse slightly, indicating a good seal. If air leaks in, adjust the respirator and repeat the check.

Tips:
Ensure straps are tightened evenly and securely.
Perform these checks every time you wear the respirator to guarantee a proper fit and optimal protection.
